Container shipping

History has proven that sometimes the simplest ideas can revolutionize an industry or stimulate an economy. Containerized shipping is one such technology that has profound effects on commerce, society, and the global economy. With the simple idea of taking the body from a tractor-trailer and placing it fully-loaded on a ship, a railroad car, or even an airplane the process saves time.

The expensive task of unloading cargo from a truck or a railroad car, loading it into the hull of a ship and reversing the process at the ship's destination is minimized by the shipping container. Handling and shipping is made easier and faster.

The unit TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) is used to express the relative number of containers based on the equivalent length of a 20' container. For example, 100 containers of 20' is 100 TEUs, while 100 containers of 40' is 200 TEUs. The ports worldwide handle over 100 million TEUs annually. International container ships are designed with compartments with cell guides (Cells) where the containers are placed for shipment. Standard containers can carry up to 20 tons (U.S.) fully loaded.  Shipments are kept together and protected from damage and the elements.  It is estimated that 90 percent of the world's trade today moves in containers.
